José Anigo

Director of Academy

José Anigo was born on 15 April 1961 in Marseille and is one of the most recognisable personalities in Marseille’s history as a footballer, coach and sports director. He joined the team’s youth squad in 1975–1976 and made his first professional participation in August 1979 as a defender. He recorded 207 participations with Marseille from 1979 to 1987, when he left to continue his career in Nîmes, Endoume, and Cassis. In 1995 he started his coaching career on behalf of Endoume. At the beginning of the 2001–2002 season he took over as assistant coach at Marseille and during the 2003–2004 season, following the dismissal of Alain Perrin, he led the club to the UEFA Cup final, featuring players like Didier Drogba, having eliminated teams such as Liverpool, Inter and Newcastle.

In November 2004 he left Marseille and returned to assume the position of sports director in the summer of 2005, having acquired players such as Ribéry, Niang, Mandanda, Cana, Cheyrou and others. As a sports director he led Marseille to the 2010 championship and three French Cups (2010, 2011, 2012). In December 2013 he resumed his position as coach and left the following season after Marcello Bielsa’s arrival. Anigo then became director general for international partnerships for the African continent. In June 2015 he signed with Tunisian team Espérance, followed by Levadiakos and Panionios, while in 2019 he took over the head of the Nottingham Forest Scouting Department.

In September 2022 he became Director of Football of Olympiacos and director of the “red-and-white” academy, connecting the operation of the first team, the second and the infrastructure departments. Since April 2023 and until the end of the 2022–2023 season he was the coach of our team. Immediately afterwards, he returned to the position of director of our academy.
