The Cup is ours!

OLYMPIACOS FC celebrated their 25th Cup title in history, after beating Atromitos FC 2-1 in the extra time of the Final that took place at the Athens Olympic Stadium, on Saturday, April 28.

Raffik Djebbour on 29 and David Fuster on 119 minutes scored the two goals that decided the winner. Matias Iglecias had equalized for Atromitos FC with the goal he scored on the 76th minute.

OLYMPIACOS FC made a good start and managed to gain control of the game, by keeping possession of the ball. The penalty Yiannis Maniatis won (and which Jose Cholevas missed) on 25 minutes as well as Raffik Djebbour’s goal on 29 minutes, were both the result of our team’s superiority on the pitch.

OLYMPIACOS FC could have scored more goals during the first half, which would have led to a clear advantage in the match, but as this did not happen, Atromitos FC took advantage of the opportunity and became menacing, while the score was still fragile in our favor.

At the beginning of the second half OLYMPIACOS FC were not as good as during the first 45 minutes. Atromitos FC played well in defense, but offensively they were not as good. Luck played a big part for our opponents, as they managed to equalize with a shot by Matias Iglecias on 76 minutes when the ball bounced off our defenders, to the back of Roy Carroll’s net.

This goal was a wake-up call for OLYMPIACOS who began pressuring Atromitos FC but failing to score another goal until the end of regular time. The game was thus led into overtime, with our team keeping the pressure on the opponent and Atromitos counter-attacking.

David Fuster resolved things, moments before the game would have to be led to penalty shoot-outs, by scoring on 119 minutes. Yiannis Fetfatzidis passed the ball on to Vassilis Torossidis, who crossed it in the opponents’ box. David Fuster was there to head the ball to the back of Charles Itandje’s net, sealing the 2-1 victory.

OLYMPIACOS FC was the best among the two sides and reached a fair victory. However, the fact that Atromitos FC equalized made it once again clear that the game only ends when the referee’s final whistle is heard.
