Our players’ comments

Read what our side’s players said after the end of the match against Montpellier.

Kostas Manolas:

“We came here for the away win and we managed to do it. The only thing we can say is to congratulate the guys and the people that came here to support us. We came here for the away win and we did it.We tried really hard tonight. As I’ve seen, Schalke beat home Arsenal, but we take each match individually. We will have the same rationale in the future and see what will happen in the end”.

Ioannis Maniatis:

“We made a sluggish start. We were a bit intimidated at the beginning. After conceding the goal, however, we reacted and gained some space. We exercised pressure and did our own game. We managed to make a comeback in a difficult encounter. These three points are extremely precious and will give us courage and hopes both for Europa League and Champions League”.

Vasilios Torosidis:

“Until that moment (when Montpellier scored) we were sluggish and didn’t take the initiatives we should. The goal conceded woke us up and prevailed in the pitch, creating chances. This is football. I cannot say I feel vindicated because the winning goal was scored on 90+2’, since the game is still on until the final whistle. This away win is valuable and the three points earned will largely help, far more in terms of psychology”.

On Olympiacos scoring from a set-piece:“In football, set-pieces account for 45%-50% of goals scored. It just happened to be me the one who scored; it could have been anyone. The only thing I take out is the victory”.

On the goal he scored:“I am not spending time to think about it. What matters is for team to score. What I take out is the joy of satisfaction. Let’s be honest, we have been harshly criticized until today, but this is something expected when one plays for Olympiacos. We have many new players in the side, and consequently the team has changed a lot. Critical players for the team and our offensive line have left. (The team) had to rebuild overnight what has been constructed last season. This is difficult because of the large number of matches and, for that reason, every coach needs some time. No one may deliver in just a couple of months”.

On the fact that he capped all European away wins of Olympiacos: “I feel happy for being fit to play football and having made a profession out of my hobby. It’s true that I have capped all away wins, since 2007 in Bremen. I fell lucky and I will understand these things once I retire. What is my mind now is the next fixture against Aris”.

Pablo Contreras:

“The truth is that we have a hard time to keep a clean sheet, but we leave here victorious and this is the most important thing. It means a lot for our psychology, it wasn’t a game of particular quality, we performed poorly but these points put us back in the qualification game”.

On the defensive response of the Piraeus side, he added:“It was really hard work but, thanks to my teammates’ help, we manage to defend our goalmouth”.

On the display of the team unit the 70 minutes, he commented:Indeed, this is something we have to improve, we miss that… It needed us to concede a goal in order to get back in the match and strive for the equalizer; I hope this was the last match this ever happened”.
