Moments after the announcement of Eric Abidal’s transfer to Olympiacos, the great French defender shared his first thoughts as an Olympiacos player. The brand new Olympiacos signing stressed his excitement for joining the club and commented on the “mad” red-and-white fans and the ICC 2014 challenge!
What are your thoughts now that you find yourself in Greece for Olympiacos?
“I think that the Greek championship is of particular interest! And now I have the opportunity to live it. I know that I have joined a club that can always fight for titles and is a steady contender for the league title. I have to bring my experience to this team after my spells abroad and help them win even more important trophies”.
Is Greece and Olympiacos a brand new challenge in your career?
“For me, it was an aim to be able to play in the Champions League. The Greek championship is certainly something different. I know that Olympiacos are a big club who have ambition and who want to win things. My job is to bring my experience to this team and help them as best I can to win more trophies.
Olympiacos supporters are a kind of…crazy! Would you like to send them a message?
“I like that; it’s a good sort of crazy, because it pushes the team on! It is important to have them by our side during the whole season; this makes us stronger during the match and it is as if we are 12 players in the pitch. The fans will be very important in helping us win the difficult matches”.
This summer Olympiacos will make this important trip to the US and Canada to face top clubs, like Liverpool, Manchester City and Milan. How do you feel about this trip?
“It will be a key component for our pre-season training, which is of major importance for the whole year. The chance to compete against such great teams is not for everyone and Olympiacos is the one thanks to the ICC! Of course, these will be friendly matches to get our team flowing on the pitch and take a good head-start in the domestic championship”.
