“Legendary” smiles in Japan

Olympiacos FC contributed significantly in setting up a football tournament in Japan.

On May 2nd, Olympiacos FC received a very particular invitation from the University of Nihon in Japan, in order to contribute in its way in setting up a football tournament for children of 10 to 12 years old, featuring 16 teams of 20 players each.
The letter was signed by said Japanese University’s Professor in Physical Education, Takahiko Aoyama, who informed us, following his congratulations on our side winning the 40th domestic championship, on the actual content of this tournament, which took place under the auspices of the Greek Ambassador in Japan and as supported by the Greek-Japanese community and major companies.
This event was part of the “Suika” festival, but since this year it will be renamed as “Greek Cup” to honor both the birthplace of the Olympic ideal and the outfit which won the Euro 2004 finals on the very year that the Olympic Games were being hosted in their native country.
Olympiacos FC was asked to send club shirts and balls signed by our players. Also, the club was kindly asked to send some memorabilia and gifts for the children participating in the tournament.
Our reply was prompt and, by means of a new letter, Mr Takahiko Aoyama expressed his acknowledgements for Olympiacos FC gentle response to collaborate with the University of Nihon for the tournament that was cordially supported by the Greek Embassy and the Greek-Japanese community.
The meaning of Olympiacos contribution was apparent in the eyes of young football players, who were filled with joy while receiving gifts at the end of the event. This letter refers also to the suffering of both countries as a result of the recent calamity in Japan and the economic crisis in Greece; yet, the sparkle in young children’s’ eyes guarantees a bright future for both countries. Moreover, it is noted that Olympiacos contribution represents a springboard for future collaboration between the “Legend”, as referred to, and the University of Nihon; congratulations were also addressed for our club successes in football and basketball, together with the wish for more to follow.
Of course, the letter couldn’t but refer to our President’s generosity, Vaggelis Marinakis, who essentially showed his support to the Japanese people for the hardships they went through, by donating a substantial amount of money.
The thankful letter towards Olympiacos FC concluded with Tomisato Mayor’s words to the Cup winners: “I hope that most of you will play one day for a club as significant as Olympiacos”.
